Söderåsen – a paradise for the family that loves adventure
A wonderful blend of Swedish nature and culture! The Söderåsen ridge is a wonderful place for adventure. Around and on the ridge there are lots of exciting places to explore, and there are plenty of exciting activities to be found in the diverse, extremely beautiful countryside. Distances are short, everything’s within easy reach.
At Söderåsen you’ll encounter dramatic nature with deep cleft valleys and precipices, fast-flowing water and dense, primeval, broad-leaved deciduous forests. The National Park, with one of Northern Europe’s biggest unbroken deciduous forests, offers rich flora and fauna. You can enjoy a magnificent view from the Kopparhatten plateau (90 m). Give the family an active holiday that’s guaranteed to leave you with plenty of great memories. Go walking through magnificent, beautiful beech forests, paddle along a winding river, admire the view from a dormant volcano, cycle along old railway tracks in a draisine, cook food over an open fire and enjoy the living countryside with its many charming farm shops and destinations.
Day 1. Arrival, check in at Pensionat Söderåsen. After checking in and having afternoon coffee at Pensionat Söderåsen, you go down to the Söderåsen National Park to visit the Naturum visitor centre. In the exhibition there you’re given guidance and learn about what is unique to Söderåsen, as well as picking up tips on what to look out for on your walk. You then walk alongside the babbling waters of the Skärån river into the Sprickdalen valley, before taking the steep path up to Kopparhatten with its amazing vantage points offering stunning views over the surrounding area (4 km, takes about 2 hours). Back at the guest house after a wonderful walk, you enjoy a tasty, ho- me-cooked dinner (2 courses) and have the chance to chat with the host family about what it’s like to live at Söderåsen and about Swedish traditions and everyday life.
Day 2. Today you’re off on a wonderful bike ride in the beautiful countryside. The small country roads wend their way through grazing pastures and meadows, down the river valley and past exciting geological sites. You’re given a tasty picnic lunch to take with you as well as tips on nice places to stop off for lunch. You’ll also have the chance to view the remains of the Jällabjär volcano and the wonderful nature reserve up in the mountains. At the end of the cycling trail you pass the picturesque village of Röstånga, where you stop and enjoy an excellent dinner (2 courses) at the “Stationen” restaurant, before cycling the last few kilometres back to the guest house. E.g. the Rönneådalen valley, Ruveröd (with an old croft and a hiking trail in an old crofter’s setting), the Eneskogen forest, the Jällabjär volcano, Röstånga.
Day 3. offers plenty of experiences of nature and exciting activities. You start by canoeing along the Rönne River, gliding gently downstream through the attractive river valley. You paddle slowly past grazing cattle, lots of dragonflies and maybe even the rare kingfisher, which is often seen in this area. You’ll be given a packed lunch to take with you, and you can stop off along the way or eat it when you get to Forsmöllan, where you leave the canoes. After a short stroll to the old railway line, you come to the draisine hire facility, where you start your journey on an old draisine. You pedal slowly along the track through beautiful countryside, and the journey ends at Ljungbyhed, where you started your canoe trip. Filled with new impressions and wonderful memories, you make your way back to Pensionat Söderåsen.
You prepare this evening’s dinner yourselves over an open fire, using local ingredients from the guest house’s wilderness kitchen. We lend a hand to keep the fire going and to prepare your food.
Day 4. Time for a full-day excursion. Kullaberg with its dramatic cliffs is an exciting destination with lots of thrilling activities. You can walk, go on a porpoise safari, go climbing, explore caves, etc., etc…. Dramatic nature, sea and adrenaline, and a magnificent view out to sea. Visit one of the picturesque little fishing villages out on the peninsula on the way back, or stop off at the market hall in Höganäs and buy some ingredients for your dinner tomorrow. & dinner arrangements; not included.)
Day 5. Today you set off on a full-day hike on the paths in Söderåsen National Park. The natural surroundings are varied and there are plenty of exciting places to explore. You walk from the Klåveröd, with its trails leading through special settings in the Skortstensdalen valley and the Snuvestuan cave. Here you can also climb up the tower on Höjehall, the highest point in Skåne, from where on a clear day you can see the silhouettes of the Öresund Bridge and the Turning Torso in Mal- mö. The Skåneleden trail, which we follow, takes you down to Skäralid through the magical, fairytale natural setting of the Sprickdalen valley. You can eat your packed lunch in a glade along the way, enjoying the silence and the fresh air. You make your own arrangements for dinner. You can either eat at Skäralids Restaurang (not included) once you’ve finished your walk, or you can prepare food in the kitchen at the guest house using ingredients you’ve bought.
Day 6. After breakfast, it’s time to explore the attractive coastal city of Helsingborg. In Helsing- borg you can mingle with the local residents on the cobbled streets and discover hidden gems in the medieval city centre. Take a stroll alongside the harbour, where the Danish town of Helsingør beckons from the other side of the Sound. It’s a short ferry ride over there to sample some Danish delicacies and visit Kronborg Castle, Hamlet’s old home. (You make your own lunch & dinner ar- rangements; not included.)
Day 7. Breakfast. Checkout and departure.
There are plenty of excellent destinations nearby (within one hour): Helsingborg, Ängelholm, Båstad, Lund, Landskrona, Ven, Kullaberg, the Tykarpsgrottorna caves, Skånes djurpark (also known as The Zoo of Nordic Animals), Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve (Kristianstad), Malmö, Österlen, Copenha- gen, Helsingør.
Other activities to try here include: mountain-biking, horse riding, Segway riding, guided walking tours, fishing, geocaching, treasure hunts, visiting farm shops, gastronomic walks, handicrafts, ho- mesteads, e.g. Ingeborrarp open-air museum.
